Ellen Estrada
[Principal]
Ellen Estrada has 27 years of experience as an urban educator and has taught at the middle school, high school and college levels. She served as Acting and Assistant Principal at Walter Payton prior to her current position as Principal. Her academic preparation spans two continents, having attended University of Wisconsin in Madison and the Universidad Catolica in Chile during her undergraduate studies. She has also attended the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University during her LAUNCH experience and Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Mrs. Estrada is a successful grant writer in the areas of science, technology and world language and is passionate about global education for students in the 21st century.
Naomi Nakayama
[Assistant Principal]
Naomi Nakayama completed her LAUNCH Internship at Walter Payton during the 2005 - 2006 school year and then returned as Assistant Principal. Before coming to Payton, Naomi taught English and ESL at Sullivan High School and served as an Assistant Principal at Clemente High School. In addition to Admissions, she will also be in charge of student activities. Naomi received degrees from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and University of Illinois at Chicago.
Ginger Lumpkin
[Assistant Principal]
Ginger Lumpkin has been an urban educator for 15 years. Early on, she received the Golden Apple Scholar award from Golden Apple Scholars Foundation for Excellence in Teaching. She joined the Walter Payton College Prep administrative team in March of 2007. Before coming to Payton, Ginger worked as a History, ESL and lead teacher. Ginger worked at Richard J. Daley Elementary School as a History teacher and technology instructor where she developed an early English Immersion lab for bilingual students. Ginger has worked as a consultant for the North Lawndale Learning Community helping teachers of elementary and high schools in that community integrate technology into their curriculum. Most recently, Ginger worked at Beasley Academic Center as a History teacher and chair of her department. Her roles at Payton include managing the school budget, helping to implement technology, monitoring student attendance and coordinating building usage.
Ginger received degrees from Northwestern University, School of Education and Social Policy and Lewis University, School of Education.
Michael Hermes
[Assistant Principal]
Mr. Hermes has worked as a counselor and social worker with students in grades 6 through 12 in parochial and public schools in Chicago and the suburbs. He was a member of the faculty team, which developed an effective program of peer group counseling. Mr. Hermes completed graduate studies at Loyola University where he graduated with a Masters in Social Work. He later received a post graduate degree in family counseling at Northwestern University. During his fourteen years at Glenbrook North High School, Mr. Hermes was actively involved in the interscholastic athletic programs coaching baseball and basketball. His mission is to work towards helping all students to realize their potential. He encourages student interactions and adheres to an open door policy.
