Introduction

The Special Education Department at Walter Payton College Prep recognizes the demands of the school's all-honors curriculum. We make every effort to assist students in navigating the requirements of their various classes. Our primary aim is to recognize and develop the cognitive strengths of our students and to help them apply their abilities to what they are learning. We do this by offering one-to-one instruction, shadowing them in their classes and modifying curriculum assignments and materials to address their learning needs. We seek to remove the stigma attached to learning disabilities so students can feel comfortable taking risks and advocating for themselves.

The self-contained autism classroom is staffed with one teacher and two teaching assistants. However, the classroom is not the only instructional environment for our students - the community is just as important. The curriculum focuses on community training, communication, vocational skills and independence.
