The Harvard Club of Chicago "Adopt-a-School" Program

The Harvard Club of Chicago started its "Adopt-a-School" program at Walter Payton College Prep High School during the school's first year of operation in 2000. The mission of the program is to assist the school in the achievement of its mission: "To develop future leaders." Graduates of Harvard College and its various graduate schools, plus their friends and associates, are available as volunteers ("Harvols").

The over 200 volunteers in the Harvol database support Walter Payton in a wide range of areas, including tutoring, college counseling, mentoring, debate, helping with club activities, and coaching. These regular Harvols and other Harvard Club members may be called on to assist students, faculty members, Principal Ellen Estrada or other administrators as needed.

A Harvol.org website has been developed to facilitate both the process of becoming a volunteer and subsequent matching of student requests for assistance with volunteer capabilities. There you will be guided through completion of the forms and steps necessary to be approved by Walter Payton and the Chicago Public Schools. You will then qualify for a login and password to the Harvol website that provides security for the personal information on the site and enables you to update your information when it changes.

If you would like to participate as part of the Harvol program, please go to the Harvol.org website.

All volunteers are required by the Chicago Public Schools to complete the Volunteer Enrollment and Release Forms and provide a Certificate of Freedom from Tuberculosis.

Silent Room

Every non-seminar day from 3 to 5pm the Payton cafeteria becomes the "Silent Room," a regular place for students to complete assignments in a silent work environment. Whether your waiting for a ride or just getting work done before leaving school, the Silent Room is the place to do it. See the tutoring schedule if you need one-on-one help.
