Graduation will take place today at Moody Church from 4 - 6pm.
Graduates must be at Payton by 1pm. 6.5.2009 The 2009 Yearbook will be distributed on Friday, June 5 from 1:00 - 3:00 during Field Day. There is a limited number of yearbooks available for purchase on a first come first pay basis for students, faculty, and staff who did not pre-purchase their yearbooks. The cost is $75.00,payable in cash, check, credit card, or money order. Payments should be made in the main office with the Business Manager, Amma Nantwi. Students purchasing books today through Friday MUST have their receipt with them when they come to pick up their book. No books will be distributed before field day. 2010 Senior Portrait Information. Jane (Teaching a Way to Lead--Margaret Haley and the CTU, research paper) and Elizabeth (Life's a Cabaret--The Life and Times of Bob Fosse, documentary) have the distinct honor of representing two of six entries from the state of Illinois at this national contest. Congratulations, Jane and Lizzie! The Academic Awards Ceremony and Banquet is June 4th, 6-8 PM. Invitations were mailed to all recipients. Congratulations to all participants in UNA-USA's New York City Model UN Conference. All of Payton's 18 delegates did an incredible job representing the nation of Mexico in their respective committees. Though competetion was tough amongst the 2400 students present, Payton's dedicated students were able to bring home the Best Overall Delegation Award. Chicago Teen Museum and Chicago Academy for the Arts Present: Teen Made Museum: Advanced Exhibit Design Teen Made Museum project offers teens the opportunity to earn a paycheck while designing a museum for, by and about teens. This program gives teens an opportunity to explore ways to incorporate their culture into the creation of their own museum, thereby changing the landscape of museums forever. How to Apply: Step 1: Complete the online application and apply for the Downtown Summer Program. Select Teen Made Museum as your first choice project. Step 2: Attend an application session. 5.6.2009 Next summer, Ms. Vander Pluym will accompany a group of students to Eastern Europe to study the living history of the Holocaust. Join your peers and Dr. Timothy Kovalcik, Holocaust scholar at Millikin University, for 10 days in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic for a once in a lifetime learning experience. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, bring a parent to the student-parent informational meeting on Thursday, May 7th, at 6:00 pm in room 220. At the meeting, we will discuss the detailed itinerary, the accompanying seminar, and all other pertinent details. Hope to see you there! The Illinois State History Fair Expo on May 7th, 2009 will showcase the projects of six Payton juniors. Congratulations to Elizabeth Alexander, Jimmy Brown, Anna Feuer, Zach Fogelson, Jane Huang, and Jerome Molasky, whose history fair projects have advanced to the state level! 4.22.2009 World Language Placement Exams: Incoming freshmen with previous experience or exposure to their first choice language at Payton, must take a placement test in order to qualify to continue in that language.� The following dates and times are for all language exams. The length of the exams vary from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the student. If a student cannot appear for either of the dates below, he/she should notify World Language Chairs, Abby Imrem via e-mail at alimrem@cps.edu or Alicia Gonzalez via telephone at 773-534-0034, Ext. 24994, to make alternate arrangements. No pre-registration is necessary. Frosh orientation dates are: August 31st and September 1st. Concert Choir Awarded Top Honor at CPS High School Choral Contest!! In the past the WPCP Concert Choir has always received Division I, Superior ratings at the CPS Choral Contest. That rating is recieved when a choir has an average score (three adjudicators) of between 36-40 points for their performances (there are a possible 40 points). This year the CPS added a new category: Division I "Honors" Superior (a choir must average 39-40 points). I am happy to announce the our Concert Choir did just that with two adjudicators awarding the choir perfect scores of 40 and one awarding a 39. For a fourth year in a row the Concert Choir also received a perfect score for sight singing. The Concert Choir performed two selections: "Exultate Justi in Domino" by the Renaissance composer Viadana, and "I Sat Down Under His Shadow" by the English anthem composer Edward Bairstow. The performances were really stunning and we are extremely proud of them. 4.13.2009

Bella Girovich, Michelle McVicker, Michelle Stearn, Dennis Li, Theo Cunningham, Gabriel Frankel, Alyssa Bonneau, and Zach Fogelson each earned recognition from the conference. All of our delegates represented Payton well. Congratulations!4.1.2009 Payton's Varsity Debate Team are Chicago's CITY CHAMPIONS!! Congratulations to Tim Bingham, Charlie Curran, Jeremiah Pickert, Halle Apy, Anisha Bhat, and Ola Topcewska, who represented the Payton Debate Team at the Chicago City Championships this weekend. Tim Bingham and Charlie Curran finished the tournament with a PERFECT 9-0 record, defeating Whitney Young in the Finals, and becoming the 2009 Varsity Chicago Debate Champions. 2009 Fundraising Gala on March 21st at Scoozi!! 2.24.2009 Payton's math team earned first place at the ICTM Regional Meet at North Park University, advancing to the state championship contest in Urbana in April. Payton defeated eight schools, including Stevenson, New Trier, Evanston, Glenbrook North and South, Niles North and West, and Maine South. Payton performed well in several areas of competition: Geometry Team, 1st Place Algebra 2 Team, 1st Place Calculator Team, 1st Place Junior Senior 8 Person Team, 1st Place Freshman-Sophomore 2 Person, 2nd Place Orals, 2nd Place Congratulations Academic Decathlon Team! PLEASE READ AN IMPORTANT MEMO ABOUT PROGRESS REPORTS AND TEACHER GRADING SCALES * * * * * FOP Fund Raising Campaign 2009!!! * * * * * Art contests and scholarships information now Onilne Walter Payton College Prep has been named a National Blue Ribbon Award winner for 2008. The announcement was made on September 9th by U.S. Dept. of Education Secretary Margaret Spellings. Payton was awarded this honor for our students in the top 10% of their state on state exams. While there are a number of high achieving schools in Illinois, Payton drew the attention of the Illinois State Board of Education after experiencing five years of consecutive growth in both math and reading on the PSAE. The school will be honored at the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education meeting on September 24 and in Washington DC at an award ceremony on October 20-21. Principal Estrada will attend the ceremony in the nation's capital accompanied by Founding Principal Gail Ward.
