About Walter Payton College Prep

Since its inception, Walter Payton College Preparatory High School has maintained a student body that is economically, geographically, and racially diverse. The goal of the school is to nurture leaders in the school, the city, the state and beyond. To this end, Payton Prep. challenges students intellectually through a curriculum which consists solely of honors and advanced placement classes. Intellectual inquiry and innovation are further stimulated by the weekly seminar program which covers topics that range from “The Zulu Language and Culture” to “Latin Dancing” and “Entrepreneurship” at Kendall College. Our motto, "We Nurture Leaders," guides the Payton Community in all areas of teaching and learning and inspires a rigorous academic program for all students in a technology-rich learning environment. Payton Prep. believes in the potential of all students to learn, strive and excel. An integral part of the Payton Prep. experience is making meaningful connections with the area's museums, cultural institutions and universities.

Payton Prep. offers a unique math, science and world language curriculum. Language offerings include Chinese, Japanese, Latin, French, and Spanish, all supporting and enhancing a global perspective. The state of the art science labs are used to teach biology, chemistry, and physics, up to advanced placement (AP) levels, as well as earth science and astronomy. The mathematics department emphasizes the use of technology, with heavy use of computers (Geometer's Sketchpad, the Statistics package Fathom, and Mathematica) and calculators that are both graphical and symbolic manipulators. We offer AP courses in calculus and statistics, and upper level courses in group theory and non-euclidean geometry.

Coursework is project-based and inter-disciplinary in all core subject areas. Video-conferencing opportunities are scheduled throughout the school year. College credit courses are available through partnerships with universities in the area. A unique combination of modified and block scheduling allows for deeper investigation and meaningful activities in all classrooms.

In May 2006, the Confucius Institute opened at Payton. Though major cities host Confucius Institutes throughout the world, only a few sites are located in the United States. Payton is the home to the only Confucius Institute not housed in a university setting and Mayor Richard M. Daley was the keynote speaker at its opening. The Confucius Institute holds over 10,000 texts for use in the classroom. Students, teachers from all over the city, and community members may visit and use the resources available, such as Chinese language software. In addition, Payton’s singing group, Sounds of Sweetness, will travel to Beijing in the spring of 2008 to perform in the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics. All Payton Prep. students have the opportunity to participate in international exchanges. These trips and interactions with visitors to Payton from around the globe create an enviroment conducive to learning and growing.

The school also offers a full roster of athletic and academic teams that compete with other high schools as well as clubs and service organizations providing meaningful learning experiences for our students beyond the school walls. Visit the sports link for a full listing of teams and clubs.
