An Illinois International High School

International Activities 2003-2004

The Foreign Language Department is looking into an exchange with French students in the neighborhood of Strasbourg as well as Beziers. This summer, World Language teachers, Abby Imrem and Elise Regan will study in France and arrange home-stays with students from Strasbourg and Beziers.

Walter Payton is also supporting two of its students in their application for a year of study abroad in Germany. This particular study abroad program is sponsored by the Bundestag who pays for the entire program, which also includes an intensive study in the German language this summer.

Under the direction of Spanish teacher, Abby Imrem, Walter Payton College Prep will become the first chapter of Los Amigos des Americas. The high school is training presently Walter Payton students who will travel to Latin America this summer where they will live with a family and perform services for that community.

Chicago Sisters Cities Program

Walter Payton College Prep completed an exchange this spring with a high school in Lucerne, Switzerland. This April, Walter Payton students visited the Swiss students whom they had hosted this past fall, and the Payton students enjoyed the visit as much as the Swiss students enjoyed their visit in Chicago. Junior Ray Washington said of the trip to Lucerne, "Everything was perfect. The kids were great, the parents were really warm and kind, and we saw so much and everything was so beautiful. It was the best time of my life." The schools are planning on continuing the exchange when another group of Lucerne students come to Chicago in the fall

International Visitors

Through the Illinois Visitors Center, Walter Payton received five University Administrators from Palestine, Chad, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia. The five university officials visited a World History class as well as an Advance Placement History class where they both answered questions as well as asked them. Afterward, the men were interviewed by reporters from the Walter Payton College Prep Newspaper.

The International Visitor Program also sent a journalist, Paul Biassette, from Paris to Walter Payton. Mr. Biasette visited French classes and Social Studies classes where he spoke with students.

Last year, through the Chicago Public School Language and Culture Department, Walter Payton received visitors from L'Institut de L'Entreprise of Paris. Once again, this month L'Institut sent us forty French business and government officials as well as politicians, magistrates, journalists and professors. They met with Payton administrators and teachers, and then they were given a tour by several of Payton's French students.

This spring, Heartland International 12 Teachers from Belarus toured Walter Payton and visited with our students. The teachers visited classrooms and gave gifts from Belarus to our students and teachers. They also took part in a discussion with several of our Russian speaking students.

The most varied group of educators who visited Walter Payton this year came from Guinea, Macedonia, Pakistan, Rwanda, Serbia/Montenegro, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. There were so many cultural differences among this group as well as differences in their national educational programs that the conversation with our students was particularly lively.

This summer, The Walter Payton College Prep Los Amigos Chapter (the first Los Amigos Chapter in Chicago) will send six Payton students Latin American countries to live with host families in small towns where the students will create and carry out community actions. This is the initial trip for the Walter Payton Chapter and students and teachers are very excited about the prospects.
