In the AP class, students will develop the linguistic and cultural skills necessary to communicate with native Japanese speakers in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes, by means of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They also develop cultural competence, make connections to other school disciplines, compare their own culture and language with that of Japan, and learn to use the language within a community broader than the traditional environment. They will acquire effective keyboarding and word-processing skills in Japanese, required for effective use of Internet resources.

Students will lean to employ appropriate politeness levels in application of the language, becoming familiar with neutral-polite and plain styles, with honorific and humilific keigo. They will necessarily acquire a comparatively large percentage of the 400 or so kanji characters recommended by the College Board.
