Payton Students at the Safe Humane Chicago Seminar
Safe Humane Chicago seminar participants freshman Anisha Bhat, sophomore Andie Silva, and senior Amanda LeVine spoke about their seminar experiences during a press conference on March 31 at the Headquarters of the Chicago Police Department to announce Best Friends Animal Society's grant to Safe Humane Chicago. Through English teacher Michelle Mowery's Safe Humane Chicago Leadership Program seminar last semester and this semester, students have studied animal rights and animal care from professionals such as lawyers, vets, the CPD K-9 unit, the CPD Animal Crimes Unit, animal trainers, radio personalities, and many others. 20 students in the seminar will become the first certified Safe Humane Educators. The students have designed a pilot curriculum that they will implement as they travel to CPS elementary schools in many neighborhoods across the city to combat unwarranted fear of dogs and to promote humane treatment of all animals. The students were featured on Fox News and in several news articles available here.
